Experience the Calming Vibration of the Hummm
Hummm to:
1. Cry out: we are here, we are here.
We hummm for the natural, nonverbal world, for our bodies. All are included. Whatever you long for, hummm for it. We hold the hummm as an exploration of the self-organizing generation of the universal life force and a prayer for all life. Let us be elemental, not mental. We are doing this not so much to be heard as to be felt.
2. Calm Your Anxiety
Hummmming in as low a tone as you can get while you hold your hand over your heart and feel the vibration there. When you inhale, do it through the nose and as deep and soft as you can. This technique immediately brings you into your body and calms your nervous system.
3. A Clear Nose
“Yep, you read that right. Humming isn’t just for annoying your coworkers—it’s a secret weapon against nasal congestion. Studies show that humming increases airflow in the sinuses and boosts nitric oxide production by up to 2,000% (yes, you read that number correctly). This magical molecule has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal powers that help keep your nasal passages clean.
Here’s how to do it:
Close your mouth and let your tongue rest on the roof of your mouth.
On your exhale, hum like you’re trying to imitate a fridge (a deep “hmmm”).
Feel the vibrations in your face? That’s your sinuses waking up.
For best results, hum 10-20 times a few times a day.
Optional: Press your index fingers on the little flap inside your ears while humming to stimulate your vagus nerve and calm your nervous system.”

4. CREATE COMMUNITY
Join a group that uses hummmming and build communities of refuge in these times. Hummmming can be used in the middle of demonstrations to remind people of their hearts and their humanity. It can also be used in response to a vulnerable sharing in a group, just put your hand over your heart, hummm, and acknowledge the person who shared.
